Event Management

In February 2013 SLC were appointed by Durban Tourism and National Geographic to co-ordinate and manage the guest list for their prestigious event launching the new National Geographic Documentary on Durban. The event took place in the flagship National Geographic Knightsbridge store on 24th April 2013 and the documentary was then aired on the National Geographic Channel throughout May 2013. SLC were assigned to compile the guest list for the event with a brief to secure a diverse selection of at least 55-60 highly qualified attendees.

After initial discussions with Durban Tourism and meeting with the National Geographic Team to discuss their requirements for the launch, our task was to secure as many relevant guests as possible from trade and media. We also needed to raise brand awareness of Durban and the cities' many attractions. After designing the invitation and liaising with South Africa Tourism to identify the correct invitees this was sent to a total of 240 relevant recipients and 73 acceptances were received. We then needed to implement extensive and consistent follow up to ensure minimal drop outs on the day of the event.

The event was attended by a total of 79 guests. Attendees included company CEO's, Africa product managers, front line sales staff, DMC's, airline representatives, South Africa Tourism, visiting dignitaries from Durban, key consumer travel writers and journalists. Attendees represented a wide cross-section of the industry, from UK market leaders selling Africa, luxury tailor made operators, concierge companies, African specialists, wildlife and adventure specialists and leading high street travel agencies.

On arrival drinks and canap├ęs were served and guests had a chance to view an exclusive art exhibition showcasing Durban plus a cookery demonstration of local delicacy Bunnychow.

After the brief speeches from The Deputy Mayor of Durban, members of the National Geographic team and Philip Sithole, the CEO of Durban Tourism, there was an exclusive first screening of the Durban documentary which had all guests enthralled and fully educated on the wonders of Durban as a destination in its own right.

SLC were also able to use the event to source and discuss valuable future opportunities for Durban Tourism from operators throughout the course of the evening.
