Zebedee SpringsWho else needs a spot of sun? Christie, Gill and I managed to escape the worst of June's record rainfall with a trip to Australia's sunniest city, Perth, for ATE. My trip started with a media famil for UK national newspapers on the Kimberley Aerial Highway – a network of runways in dramatic outback locations, lush national parks and at new luxury lodges opening across this northwest region. From wildlife spotting at the new Kuri Bay, to pearl meat tasting in Broome and star-gazing in the world-heritage listed Bungle Bungles, there was adventure around every corner. My favourite bit? Possibly horse riding through El Questro Wilderness Park (check out the new suites here too). If you are short on time the aerial safaris are the perfect way to hop from one jaw-dropping location to the next while appreciating the scale and grandeur of Australia's final frontier. Visit here for more info or here for photos! Not to be outdone, Christie took a trade famil swimming with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef and cattle mustering at Home Valley. Photos and whale tales to follow.

Whale Sharks Ningaloo Reef WA MUST CREDIT JAMES MORGANTourism Western Australia today launches a new Facebook campaign to share and support research into one of Western Australia's most extraordinary visitor experiences, swimming with the world's largest fish, the whale shark.

Here are some whale shark facts for you!

• Whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea, growing up to 18 metres long

• Ningaloo Reef is one of only a few places in the world where whale sharks appear regularly in any numbers, in near-shore waters where they are easily accessible to observers

• Mass coral spawning in March/April each year triggers the arrival of the whale shark to Ningaloo Reef

• While the official whale shark tourism season is from April to July, sightings can be made as early as March and as late as September

• Whale sharks are protected in Australian waters under state, federal and international legislation. A licensing system was introduced in 1993 for all whale shark tours in Western Australia
